The Monday Melee Questions:

The Sleep Edition

1. The Misanthtropic: Name something (about humanity) you absolutely hate.

That we don’t know how to sit back, relax and really get rest.

2. The Meretricious: Expose something or someone that’s phony, fraudulent or bogus.

Sleeping Aids. The whole lot of them. I think (rightly or wrongly so) I’ve tried them all. Breathe right strips, natural sleeping pills, bubble baths. The whole lot. A bunch of hog-wash.

3. The Malcontent: Name something you’re unhappy with.

I’ve really started to look as tired as I feel.

4. The Meritorious: Give someone credit for something and name it if you can.

Anyone who really gets their 8 hours a sleep a night. Kudos to you all.

5. The Mirror: See something good about yourself and name it.

I certainly know how to enjoy sleep if I get to have it.

6. The Make-Believe: Name something you wish for.

Counting Sheep that would really help me get more sleep 🙂

My $0.02 on sleep…

1. Be active. I find doing atleast some physical activity every day goes a long way to getting a good nights sleep. How much? Breaking a sweat for at least 20 minutes is a good start.

2. Be regular. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day makes a big difference. It can be hard at first to get to sleep earlier, but after a couple days your body gets used to it.

3. Avoid caffeine. When I’m active its not as big of an issue, but if I haven’t been doing anything then it can really mess up my sleep.

4. Don’t eat before bed. This one also goes in the general health and weight management catagory. Most recommendations I’ve heard say not to eat anything 3 hours before bed. You’re getting energy from the food you’ve just eaten, and your body doesn’t need it, so it goes into storage.

5. Turn off the TV and read a book. I find TV the worst thing… all the good shows seem to start at 10pm which means I’m up until 11, and next thing I know I’m over tired and can’t get to sleep.

6. Have a warm drink. This is one that Kate likes to do… warm milk with a little vanilla for flavour.

7. Kick the pets out. While I can’t speak to this from personal experience, it was something I saw on Oprah, so it must be right.

8. Temperature. I sleep better when its cool out. That’s pretty much the only time I’ll put the AC on… just before bed to take the edge off the heat.

Think that’s it for now… hope something there helps. Getting a good night’s sleep goes a long way to having a good day, and being productive. Good luck, and hopefully you find something that works for you.

Although I don’t care what the heck Oprah says, my kitties aren’t a going nowheres. . . .

Besides, they sleep on the floor in the summer anyways. . .
